The United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) provides the United Nations System with technical security advice. The headquarters of UNDSS is in New York, but they have a number of professional staff members present in Uganda. In Uganda the aim of the UNDSS team is to enable the UN to carry out its various programmes in all areas of Uganda. UNDSS staff members are located in Kampala and work in strategic locations throughout Uganda alongside their fellow UN colleagues.

UNDSS has a number of functions. Some of them are as follows:

• Liaison with the host government’s security forces
• Security planning
• Management of the radio rooms and security coordination centers
• Gathering, analysis, and distribution of security related information
• Conducting risk assessments
• Security advisory for all staff members
• Security surveys of UN and staff properties
• Assistance to agencies in their implementation of UN security policies

Hopes for 2008:

UNDSS will continue to promote the security culture within the UN system in Uganda. UNDSS hopes to continue to improve security services available for all UN agencies.
