Success story about curriculum trainings in the Ruhiira Millennium Village

Just to share interesting experiences from trainings focused on improving pupils' performance. In May 2008, we conducted a training workshop on Teacher effectiveness aimed at equipping teachers with skills in setting Standardised tests, effective lesson delivery and participatory methods of teaching. I was all smiles when teachers from Ruhiira MVP schools and outside the project area set the first set of papers which we processed and pupils from P5-P7 sat for them at the end of this second term 2008. I even got excited when one head teacher commented; 'What pleased me was that pupils performed well in these exams and we didn't have to pay for papers which teachers did not set'.
I realised that pupils fail some examinations due to the fact that they have not covered the content therein. This set was particularly an encouragement to them.

From 19th to 21st August 2008, head teachers were trained in curriculum management. This workshop equipped them with skills in supporting curriculum implementation, as mentors and chief educators in schools. The head teachers and deputies were very motivated. This was expressed through the participant representative in the closing ceremony who said; 'We feel empowered and motivated. We pledge that there will be a total change in our schools.' The centre chairman made everybody laugh, when in his speech, he said 'I wish I could 'rewind' my age. Good things have come when I am retiring. Nevertheless, it's never too late. I will still cause a change at my school.' I felt happy with the commitment they were expressing especially in changing their attitude towards work because change of attitude can ‘move mountains.'
The workshop was then crowned with receiving of certificates of achievement. This motivated them even more as they proudly said that they now have what to present in the coming restructuring by the ministry of education and sports.
Why are we succeeding? I think the extemporal leadership by the top management of MVP Mbarara, the encouragement by the National coordinator, the integrated approach among all our sectors, collaboration and partnership with Isingiro Local Government and communities have all blended well to result into great success in our organisation. These have made me feel good about working with you all. I am happy that I belong to a team of achievers!
