Strengthening Small and Medium Entreprises (SMEs)

Background

Small and Medium Enterprises comprise over 90% of Uganda’s private sector. They contribute to employment, provision of basic goods and services, and generation of export and tax revenues for national socio-economic development. However, Uganda has one of the highest private business failure rates in the world. This is largely due to the lack of entrepreneurial skills, lack of access to high quality and affordable business development services, limited access to finance, lack of adequate technical and management support services and limited access to information on market opportunities.

Development objectives

The general objective of the intervention is to develop competitive and viable enterprises by enhancing the operational efficiency and management capacity of indigenous SMEs through delivery of business development services so that they can contribute to the generation of employment and incomes.

Activities & expected results

The project provides entrepreneurship and management training, as well as mentoring and counseling services to participating enterprises.

Competitiveness of 200 local SMEs has been enhanced through the provision of assorted business development services. The project will equip 200 entrepreneurs with business and management skills and provide business counseling and advisory services to 200 enterprises.

Implementation phase

The project is providing mentoring and counseling services to the participating companies.
