The United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM)’s mandate provides for support to catalytic and innovative actions for gender equality and women’s empowerment. It further stresses the role in mainstreaming gender equality within the UN system. Building on this mandate UNIFEM has strategic engagement with the government of Uganda through the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development (MGLSD), with the women’s civil society in Uganda.

As part of the UN system in Uganda and in the context of northern Uganda’s reconstruction efforts, UNIFEM enjoys a particularly strong relation with UNDP which is the Cluster Lead on Early Recovery.

UNIFEM’s current country programme focuses on engaging with the UNDP and the Government of Uganda, on building up on its physical presence in Uganda and working towards national ownership.

The Joint Sexual Gender Based Violence Project for Northern Uganda in collaboration with the Government of Uganda & UNDP is currently the programme’s main project. The office is also working towards mainstreaming Gender within the UN response, through the Donor Thematic Group on Gender.

Additionally, UNIFEM provides support to the on-going Juba peace process between the Government of Uganda and the LRA, strongly advocating for women’s full participation in the talks and the integration of gender equality concerns in their outcomes.
